” John L Quarles my grandmother’s brother enlisted in the Army on October 9th 1940. On October 29th 1940 he was shot accidentally in the barracks at Fort Knox Kentucky. A bunk mate was cleaning his gun and didn’t realize it was still loaded. He was 18 years old. His death greatly affected my Mamaw. She told the story many times during her life. William Pennington Quarles was his 4th great-grandfather. “
