CLEAN-UP, REFURBISHING OF CABIN UNDERWAY
A lot of elbow-grease and the generosity of Advisory Council member Jeff Jones are transforming the log cabin adjacent to the White Plains Historic Home. Now that it’s all spruced up, Jeff will be bringing in period furnishings. Just to sweeten the deal, board member Joanne White has revamped the garden between the home and cabin. Pictured are Advisory Council members Eunetta Jenkins and Liz Mullens, along with Friends’ Board member Jennifer Dewar, who spent a day cleaning and sorting.
ROOF REPAIR IN PROGRESS, THANKS TO PRESERVATION GRANT, CITY MATCH
The much-needed repair to the White Plains Historic Home’s roof is expected to wrap up this week, thanks to a $22,500 grant from the Tennessee Historical Commission and matching funds from the City of Algood. City staff member Roy Phipps coordinated the project’s bidding process and execution. Upper Cumberland Development District and Friends’ Advisory Council member Mark Dudney worked alongside City Administrator Keith Morrison, with approval by the Algood City Council, to secure the preservation grant.
FRIENDS LOSE CHARTER MEMBER W. CALVIN DICKINSON
Friends charter member and historian W. Calvin Dickinson passed away August 30. He was 83. His advocacy of preserving local history – including the White Plains Historic Home – was unparalleled in our community, and the Friends lost a powerful ally and staunch supporter with his passing. Calvin lost his wife, Charlene, in April; she too took part in Friends’ activities and events. Calvin’s and Charlene’s obituaries can be read here:
